DigiClay (Max MSP project) Sketch 1

Inspiration:
The idea came from the experience creating something with a black of clay or playdou. There is this intertwine sensation of your imagination that can be freed and creatively model something that your heart desire.  This was a collective memory our team have and making something to called it ours.  Digiclay reminiscence the joy of pottery. Where the user can modify a digital clay while only moving their hands in the air.

Research (images) : Conceptual, Types of interaction

Initial researches begin from 1. Precedents 2. Hand gestures 3. Movements of the pottery activity.

From our precedents research, we found a digital artwork by the UNIFOLD, the Electronic Artisan. It idea is to sculpt a block of polygon on the computer screen through the use of finger movements. We compared the inputs, tracking system and the processing method between Digiclay and this work.

Technical Aspect: tools, physical environment setup

This is a simulation of virtual clay, but we still would like to make the experience as real as possible. Hence we also created a prototype of of a potter spinning disk. When User sit in front of our installation. They will wonder why spinning wheel for making pottery is empty. When we start the actual simulation, they will realize they are suppose to manipulate the virtual clay on screen.  There always a disconnection between the projected and the tangible world. We want to bridge this gap this is why we created this is reason why we created the spinning wheel is implemented in the first place is to fill the gap between virtual reality and real tangibility.  The spinning wheel will be place on a table and a chair will be provided for the participant to further enhance their experience with our virtual clay.

There will be a common class set up of camera and project. The camera will be facing the participant in front of the projector. The projector will project the image on the screen.

In our set up, we decided to use color gloves for easy tracking for Max MSP. Inside, Max program there will be specific program set up to distinct the color of gloves we choose to use. The reason why we decided to use color gloves is we want to track the hand gesture and manipulation of the participant and translate that into our virtual clay.

The projector and camera set up was fix, this was a constraint to our team. Original few idea we propose has not taken into the consideration with such set up so we could not implemented. Also our team have to take into the consideration where to place the color gloves, where we did not want to accidentally triggers the simulation. (One solution was to manually start the program this fixed the issue of the glove accidentally we in the way of the virtual clay.

320: Week 5: Brain storm Responsive Environment

We came up with new idea this week because last week which comply with the class set up of projector and screen

Idea 1:   Interactive floor pond.
As the person move across the digital pond, fishes will follow. This will put the audience into the situation. We want to see if he user will stay and interact with the fishes. This will reveal two different characteristic of a person. Will you run away from danger or fight against such force.  Since there are various type of fish from gold fish to sharks.  [This is the prlimiary idea]

After talking to Jinsil she suggest this set up will not compliy to next week’s requirment so if we going to pursue this idea this will have to be on screen deminstration.

We can forsee the diffculty in this idea will be how to animate the fish to be believable to the user.

The quality of motion will be motion detection of the person  or touch interaction on the screen.

Idea 2: Cloud
Using rear projector and camera set up. User are ask to explore a digital cloud to reveal the hidden image beneath the clouds.

User are supose to wave their hand on the screen to decrease the opacity of the cloud. The longer the person hand stays on the screen the more of the image will reveal underneath. This will also give a sense of mystery to intrigue the user to explore whats beneath. Images will change everytime. So there will not be redundency.

Idea 3_A:   Light Painting
Using chinese caligraphy to paint on surfaces.

Idea 4: Digital Pottery

This installation will ask the user to sit in front screen with a real pottery table. They will be sitted comfortablly then ask to manipulate the digital image on screen.  The image will be screen or a shadow or image [ to be determine ]. User will ask to put on different color gloves for video detection. Then they will start to play around with the image.  The camera will situate above the pottery table, when the user place their hand in the right bounding area.  Video will capture the hand and through video substraction, pixel of the shadow will decrease and will form a new shape.

The quality of the interaction is the manipulate a digital object in a tangible environment.

320: Week 4: Brain storm Responsive Environment

We were very excited about the first project with responsive environment. For our first meeting, we sat down and discuss different strategy to approach this project.
We took two approach:

  1. Technology Inspire
  2. Precedent Inspire

After 2 hour of discussing, ideating, brainstorming and discussing we took idea from each methodology we use. Since we all came out with some idea from both side.

Idea 1

Body Symphany: A collaborative musical installtion, where different motion and gesture will create different sound. This will allow participant use their body language to create music. How you move your body will dictate how pitch is play.
Idea 2:  Reactive Surface.

Precedent:  Tokujin Yoshioka “lake of shimmer”, hyposurface, trioka light (heatral airport),
Utilizing different sensors and camera to create a responsive surface that mimic anthropomorphic and natural movement.
For example, if you touch the surface it will react like you just touch the water will phsyical ripple effect.

Idea 3: Responsive Wall / Curtin

Have you ever imagine you want to create your own space? We came up with this idea when we discuss our idea inside one of the student room. In side this room there are alot movable walls but they are come in panels so they aren’t too flexible in where they go. When i think deeper, everyone need their own space, in order to crate this space there must be some sort of divide.  If you want to make a space as flexible to your need as possible then the wall has to be able to configure to any way you want. Then the idea of our responsive wall or curtin comes alot.  Through gesture control such as simple action waving your arm in a certain direction.
Idea 4: Shadow Buddy

Everyone has their own shadow, we looked into using shadow to open up a more interactive and exploratory realm: Please see our sketch to understand how it works.

We looked into embroided potentiometer to see and how it works, also we look into stroke sensor and how it work.. by looking into these sensors it gave us few idea from above.
